Three step year-end marketing review
At the beginning of the year, I reached out to our clients and requested a thirty-minute phone call to review how we’re doing, how things are going with their marketing, and to see how we might be able to help them make 2019 their best year ever.
One of the things we discussed was how our team might be able to change, adjust, tweak, or even add systems and processes and other things, to help get them closer to where they want to be. In essence, the phone call was to help them with a year-end marketing review.
If you don’t have a formal online marketing branch of your company (which I suggest every business owner should work toward!), you truly need to start the new year with a year-end marketing review on your own.
So what does a year-end marketing review look like?
I’ll be straight with you here. You might need to get your hands dirty for this; and unless you’re a numbers geek, it probably isn’t going to be very much fun. But, if you take the time to sit back and look at what you’ve done and what you’d like to be doing to promote your business, I’m willing to bet this time next year, you’ll have a much happier bank account because of your efforts.
Step One: Start by taking stock of everything you’ve done over the past year to market or promote your business. Then, make some notes about the results each of your marketing tactics returned. This means doing things like printing your analytics and drilling down to see how each of the various systems and platforms you use is working for you: LinkedIn, your email newsletter, your website, Twitter, Facebook … essentially anything related to promoting your business or advertising. Go over everything to see what resulted in the most visibility and exposure. Make a point of doing more of those things that worked, and less of the things that didn’t. If something you’re currently doing isn’t producing any results, you may need to adjust your activities, or refocus them. But, you can’t possibly know what to do to improve if you don’t know what’s working and what isn’t!
Step Two: Make a list of the types of online marketing you want to do more of this year. That might be podcasting, blogging, speaking, publishing, social media. Do you need to invest in training or read a few key books about online marketing? Are you ready to offer more services, or ready to finally set up a shopping cart and sell a product or two? Write it all down. Now you have a list of the things you need to do more of, the things you need to do less of, and the things you want to finally get around to doing. It’s time to take action!
Step Three. With a better idea of the things you’ve done that have worked, and those that haven’t, you’re already starting the year off with a ton of ammunition to get you on the right track for a successful year. At this point, you just have to make a plan! Easy, right?Do you know what's working and what isn't in your business?
Those things you identified in Step Two? Pick one of the items on your list and do it. If it’s “do more blogging,” then choose a date on your calendar to sit down and do some writing. If it’s “get on Instagram,” then create your account and post your first image! This is the time to act. At the very least, circle some dates on your calendar, and make a schedule to get you started.
If your business wasn’t as successful in 2019 as it could have been, conduct a marketing review and find out what you can do to make sure 2020 is! Take the time to find out what worked, and what didn’t, and then do what you need to do to start doing more of what does!
