As you read this post, I am in sunny Orlando for one of my favorite live events of the year: the International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA) Live Summit!
I love attending the IVAA Summit because I get to do all kinds of networking, make new connections, get the up-to-date info and skinny about my industry and tools of the trade. But I also love it because I get to reconnect with colleagues and friends I’ve made over the years. Colleagues and friends I only see at this yearly event for the Virtual Assistant industry.
Even though there is usually a fairly decent-sized price tag attached for registration, travel and accommodations, I’ve been a longtime advocate of business owners attending their industry’s annual conference. I also believe you can get a tremendous amount of value attending non-industry related events that might be related to your target market (NSA, ICF, eWomen) or the types of services you provide (Social Media World, Boom Social, Blog World). There are a ton of benefits for attending live events. Today I’ll share some of my favorite reasons.
You learn so much. Breakout sessions, workshops, keynote speakers … there is so much experience to draw from, and so many opportunities to ask questions at conferences and summits. I really can’t put a price tag on the knowledge I’ve gained from the many live events I’ve attended.
You become inspired. The energy at live events is amazing. Everyone in the room is there for the same reason you are: to learn and grow! I often have tons of new ideas for my business as a result from just being in a high energy atmosphere, surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs. I sometimes learn as much sitting with my fellow event attendees swapping stories over coffee or drinks as I do in the sessions and workshops. The energy at a live event is amazing. A break from the usual. We all need a change in scenery once in awhile, and really, being in Orlando at the moment? It doesn’t get much better than this! Working alone from home can be isolating at times, and a little break from work/life as usual is always a good idea. I’ll return to my office refreshed and brimming with new ideas to implement.
Exposure. I’m making all kinds of connections here in Orlando at this summit! I’m meeting potential new subcontractors to add to my team, and I’m introducing my business to others who may be able to refer me to speakers and coaches looking for the services I provide.
Focus on your business. There are no distractions when you’re attending a summit or conference. Well, except for the fun ones, and they don’t really count. But for 90% of the time here in Orlando, I’m focused on my business, which is often hard to do when I’m back at home because I’m working in my business. This is me-time. Time set aside just for me and the benefit of my company. Based on the differences I see in my own business when I haven’t been able to attend any live events, I’m willing to bet that if you don’t get to enjoy the benefits of attending a live event at least once a year, you’re probably not as successful as you could be if you made it a priority to attend at least one live event!
Being around like-minded people. When you spend so much time in your own world in your own business, you sometimes forget there may be a bunch of other people out there you with whom you could share thoughts and use as a sounding board for ideas. That’s what you find at a conference like this—people who share similar struggles and frustrations, as well as similar wins and successes! It’s very refreshing and makes for some great conversations and epiphanies.
I really can’t say enough about how much I love attending live events. Yes there is a cost involved, but it’s an investment in your business. An investment in your success! I know that when I get back home to Ohio, I will be a better business person than I was when I left, because that’s what learning does for us.
I’d love to know what you love most about attending live events. Leave a comment and let me know what 1 most favorite thing about these events you enjoy the most.
But for now, duty calls … there is a group of ladies I know who are waving me over to their table. I must join them!
