Ominous messages aside, Carbonite is a very economical online system (similar to Mozy), that backs up all of your files (even Outlook PST files) continuously, in the background as long as your computer is turned on.
What I like most about Carbonite is that it really is a “set it and forget it” software. I like the security of knowing all of my files are being backed up as I work; plus it’s so seamless I usually forget it’s even happening. After installation, it automatically starts backing up all your files to a server somewhere in a secure cloud. The initial backup is seriously slow because it uses only a small portion of your available system resources so it doesn’t interfere with other programs. But it truly is worth the wait, because after that, any changes you make to your files are backed up automatically and quickly.
Carbonite is available for the reasonable price of $59 per year, a drop-in-the-bucket compared to the peace of mind it gives business professionals. There are also two other plans available. The HomePlus plan is $99 per year, but also provides a mirror image backup, as well as the option to backup an external hard drive. The Home Premier plan at $149 per year adds in a courier recovery services (U.S. only) for those who don’t want to wait while their backup restores from the cloud. What about all of those precious video files on your hard drive? You can manually set Carbonite to back them up along with your other files with the first two plans, and it’s automatic with the Home Premier plan.
