Some of our favorite platforms have been making some big changes lately – 3 in particular. One good, one not so good. And one, I’m not quite sure if I’m gonna like it or hate it … time will tell.
Here are the 3 most recent updates that have caught my eye.
MailChimp: For those of us who use MailChimp, we have often bemoaned the way they have lists set up. Lists in general are clunky, and, if you have the same person with … even with the same email address, on more than one list, that person is counted for each list they are on. (my name on 3 lists counts as 3 contacts). But good news is afoot! Tags have now replaced static segments in MailChimp! Programs like Infusionsoft, Active Campaign, and a few others have been using tags very successfully for years, as tags are a more customizable and flexible way to organize your audience. Now MailChimp has them! For those of you who have never used tags before, MailChimp says to think of them as labels you can create and assign to your contacts as needed. Now I’ve just got to get in there and play with tags in my account to see what I can do with them.
Facebook vs 3rd Party Apps: If you don’t already know, I’m telling you now. As of August 1, Facebook pulled the plug on 3rd party apps posting to your Facebook profile. Your personal profile, not your page or your groups. They are safe for now. This means if you’ve been using scheduling apps like Hootsuite, CoSchedule, MeetEdgar, Missinglettr, or any other 3rd party app to post to your Facebook profile … it’s a thing of the past. For those of us who routinely (or at least we did before August 1.) schedule daily motivational quotes, funny quotes, and other posts on our personal profile to build relationships and engage with our contacts, it’s not the best news we’ve had lately. As it is with so many other people I am connected with, our personal profiles are where we get the most action and build the best relationships. From now on, all posts to your personal profile must be added manually to your profile, or shared from your page … which means more time spent on social media every day. Most of the people I’ve chatted with will now be scheduling those posts to their business page, and hoping … they have the same impact as before.MailChimp, WordPress and Facebook are at it again!Click To Tweet
WordPress: The much anticipated Gutenberg editor is due to be rolled out sometime this month. Right now they are fixing up a lot of bugs and glitches, but it should be ready to go by the end of the month. It’s not going to be a “clean” switch, and could get quite messy with deeply integrated plugins, and older themes. I personally, am not looking forward to it. This is the one I’m really on the fence about. I love the current WP editor. I’ve heard the switch is going to be a bit messy at first, but it is touted by many to be the best thing to happen to WordPress since the invention of sliced bread. Again … only time will tell.
Here are links to a bit more information about Gutenberg and what to expect. Once you read them, you’ll know what I know 😉
That’s all for now … as more information about Gutenberg or any other updates and changes surface, I’ll be sure to let you know.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to find out how we help our clients get out, and stay out, of marketing overwhelm, just shoot me a message and let me know!
