Every year I hear the same old complaints. I hear my colleagues and associates and other business professionals lament about the so called “summer slump.” This is the time of year many businesses start noticing a loss of momentum with sales slowing to a trickle and social media sites becoming quieter and less active. Why does this happen? Because people are off doing other things outside, enjoying the sun, and having fun!
Summertime brings warm weather and the lure of outside fun with friends and family, which is great; but it also means they aren’t all sitting at their computer as much as they do when the weather is colder and the kids are back at school. I’ve heard these same business owners speculate aloud whether it’s even worth it to continue social media efforts during these slower months.
My advice … don’t stop engaging, posting, Tweeting, or linking. We may be in the midst of what is often perceived as a “summer slump,” but one thing is for sure. Consumers may not be at their computers, but they are still “connected.” Think about it. How often do you leave the house without your mobile device or iPhone? Pretty much never. Consumers and potential clients are still out there, they are simply “going Mobile.” Instead of backing off on your marketing and social media efforts, just change them up a bit to fit the season and habits of your target audience. Make sure your website and blog are mobile-ready, and bump up your social media efforts to continue building relationships and marketing your business and products throughout the summer just like you would at any other time of the year. Business can be conducted as usual just as easily with a cell phone or the variety of other mobile devices out there, so don’t think people aren’t listening or watching just because you don’t see them!
