If you are a Dropbox user, you may have noticed an email from them in the past few weeks talking about “web vulnerability that affects shared links to documents containing hyperlinks.” What this means is; Dropbox users can share links to any file or folder in their Dropbox. Files shared via links are only accessible to people who have the link. However, shared links to documents can be inadvertently disclosed to unintended recipients through a variety of scenarios.
Dropbox’s solution, as a precautionary measure, was to disable shared links that were created before May 5 to file types (such as PDF or Word docs) that might contain a hyperlink. Basically, if you’ve created an optin that has Dropbox hosting the freebie for new users to claim, that link will now error out , leaving your new or potential customer high and dry .
The good news is that Dropbox does give you the option to override their choice to disable your links, but it needs to be done manually. Those who are comfortable with the risk can click a button to dropbox.com/reenable_links and reactivate all disabled shared links in your Dropbox. If you choose to reactivate all disabled links in your Dropbox, there is a helpful tutorial to assist with that process.
