As a speaker you need to be in front of an audience. Whether you prefer virtual events, such as teleseminars and webinars, or speaking live in front of targeted audiences at conferences and trade shows, the goal is to be speaking on a consistent basis. After all, you’ve worked hard to perfect your platform, and you can only get your message out there if you have an audience to share it with. However, what frequently happens with many speakers is they spend so much time preparing their talks; they neglect to promote them effectively. What then happens is they have this rock’n event, but very few people in attendance. That’s why it’s important to spend the time to market effectively. And we have tips to help you make that happen.
Top tips to promote your speaking events:
Press releases – An upcoming speaking event is a perfect reason to write a press release. This is the newsworthy information you should be writing about. Some essentials to include are the who, what, when, where and how. One thing many often miss out on is giving reasons to attend the event–the why. Don’t just promote the event. Promote the benefits to those who attend. Explain how you understand their problems and you have solutions to share with them.
Promote to your list – These are the people who are already familiar with you and more likely to sign up for what you have to offer. So aggressively promote to them. Let them know about your next big event and what it can do for them. The trick is to do this without overselling. You don’t want to abuse your list by sending out reminders multiple times a day, but you do want to let them know early on, and on a regular basis so they can make plans to attend and invite their friends as well. Send out regular reminders leading up to the event and then get more aggressive immediately before the event. And going back to providing the benefit of attending, instead of just saying, “I will be speaking here and you need to come,” provide the value they’ll receive by attending. Try this instead—“I will be speaking here, and if you need to know how to get more sales out of all your promotions, then this event is for you.” See the difference?
Use your social media connections correctly – Take advantage of all your social media connections to promote your events. You, or your online support specialist, should prepare your social media tweets and Facebook posts well in advance so they can be scheduled to go out at the optimum times. Don’t forget to use hashtags to help get you in front of your targeted audience and allow people to track your event more easily. Also, consider running a Facebook ad or promote the status updates that discuss the event. This is a great way to get more exposure; and because it’s for a shorter duration, it’s more affordable.
Engage attendees – Another way to get great exposure is to get people talking during the event itself. Encourage those in attendance to tweet their thoughts and tips throughout the event. We also highly recommend having your online support specialist attend as well. Not only can they help with back of the room sales and run errands for you, they can tweet tips you offer during your presentation. If someone else is already tweeting key points, it makes it easy for those who are attending to simply retweet the information.
Promote through the conference – If you are speaking at an event hosted by another organization or business, ask if they have a newsletter or blog. If they do, see if you can provide an article or blog post to showcase your expertise. This is the perfect way to engage with those who are coming.
