Online marketing can be challenging. Even though we know the stats and what we should be doing, the actual “doing” can be another story. It is often so much easier said than done. For example, most experts agree that a good ratio on social media engagement is 80/20 – eighty percent engagement and twenty percent promotions. We know this. The engagement part can be easy, but what about the promotions part? How can you work in that 20% without feeling cheesy and too salesy? How do you get your message out to your followers without turning people away? That’s what we will discuss here.
How to get the most out of your online and social media marketing:
Follow Good Examples – One tip we recommend is to see how others are doing it. Think back over the past few weeks to the newsletters you’ve read or the social media updates you’ve shared. What was it about them that made you want to pass on the information or read more? Some people are so good at promoting their products and services that you may not even recognize it as marketing. For example, they will routinely announce their events or their specials. Because you’re used to seeing it, you don’t question it and may even look forward to it. Some offer monthly sales. You’re used to seeing these sales and often know that a sale is coming, so you may wait for it to hit before making your purchase. What else are they doing that leaves you feeling comfortable and eager to sign up for what they offer?
You also want to make sure you are following the social media and Facebook experts; those that give regular webinars and seminars on social media and similar marketing topics. Attend as many of these seminars as you can. The value they add is priceless. (An added bonus for attending—oftentimes the speakers will offer great promotions to those in attendance.)
Create a Series of Promotional Posts and Tweets – When you create a series of posts and tweets, it’s easier to see the overall message. It allows you to be creative, ensures that you add value to your posts, and helps you avoid being too repetitive. For example, let’s say you’re promoting a book. One promotional post or tweet can announce where it can be found on Amazon. Another can provide a recently received book review. Another post might provide the link to a recent article or press release about the book. Follow up with a tip or two from the book; and finally, how about a sale or a current promotion you’re having. Can you see how simply you’re able to get the word out by creating multiple postings about your book, yet still keep it fresh and interesting without seeming pushy or salesy?
Go Beyond Cross-Promoting – We all know you want everyone on your Facebook page to sign up for your newsletter and also check out your blog. You also want those on your blog and website to become a fan of your business Facebook page. Many know this, but just aren’t doing it effectively because they don’t have a “Like” button on their site. The “Like” button is very important. It enables visitors to “Like” your Facebook page without leaving your website. Convenient for them; easy marketing for you.
Also, to get more sign-ups for your newsletter, we recommend having a way for your Facebook fans to sign up for your newsletter from your Facebook page. It could be a button or sign up area, and it should be adequately marked so it’s easily seen. Then when you send out a newsletter, mention all the goodies it contains. Don’t just say, “Our newsletter went out today.” Say something like, “Our newsletter went out today and if you need to know how to rock 2013 with your social media efforts, you need to read our article on ’Getting More Results with Your Social Media Efforts in 2013.” The benefit here is that you are telling them, “I have something new you might not have seen before.” You can also send out teasers a week or so before each newsletter to let readers know what’s coming and to watch for it so they don’t miss out!
