I listen and watch a lot of podcasts. One of the things that podcasters do really poorly is naming their episodes.
Last week, I shared 2 ways you can write an episode title that attracts attention. Here are 2 additional tips to take note of:
1. Show the problem your episode will solve
Recently, I interviewed an award winning journalist for my podcast New Media Tycoon. My expert gave tips on how you can turn an interview into a powerful and compelling story.
At first, the episode title only contained the name of the person I interviewed. After a few weeks, I changed the title to How to Tell a Story Through Your Podcast. I noticed a 35% jump in downloads after I made this change.
The increase in downloads happened because my episode now satisfied a common problem that podcasters have. Many don’t know how to interview, let alone how to make an interview interesting enough for people to consume.
Many podcasters make the mistake of writing an episode title that only contains the name of the person who was interviewed. Unless you interviewed an A-list celebrity, you should rarely use just the name of the interviewee in the episode title.
When you create a title that shows what problem you will help your audience solve, this increases the number of downloads and subscribers.
2. Make every episode title unique
While in the iTunes podcasting directory, I came across a sales podcast called Solution Selling Today. Intrigued, I clicked on the podcast title only to find that each episode was called Solution Selling Today. I didn’t subscribe as I thought every episode was going to be the same.
This is a great example why you should make every episode title unique. Since you produce unique episodes, each episode deserves to stand out on its own with a unique title.
Just like a television show, although the name of the series remains the same eg. Seinfeld, each episode has its own unique title eg. The Nap, The Busboy, The Ticket. This helps to peek interest, provide variety and grow your audience.
