I listen to, and watch a lot of podcasts. One of the things that podcasters do really poorly is naming their episodes.
Your episode title is just like a book title – it will attract eyeballs or earbuds based on what it says. Your audience will choose to listen or watch your episode if your episode title peaks their interest.
Here are some ways you can write an episode title that attracts attention:
1. Put the episode number at the end.
Some podcasters write their episode title by leading with the episode number. For example, podcasters will write:
Episode 1: How to Write a Podcast Title
This presents a problem. If you’re using a blog to publish your podcasts, the URL is created based on what you write in the title of your post. Some blogs will only grab the first few characters in your post name and include that in the URL.
So, instead of getting a URL that reads like this:
You lose out on search engine traffic because your URL isn’t descriptive enough in the second example. Very rarely do people search by just plugging in the words “episode” or “how to” in a search engine.
So, put the episode number at the end of your episode title. That way, the URL that’s generated by your blog will grab as much as the descriptive text as possible. Here’s how your episode title will look with the episode number at the end:
How to Write a Podcast Title (#1)
2. Make sure your episode name contains keywords.
I remember interviewing Kim Duke, the Sales Diva, on the common mistakes that women make during the sales process. As I listened to the replay of our interview, the keyword that I wanted to put in my episode title was “selling mistakes”. The episode title became Selling Mistakes to Avoid (#13).
Little did I know how profitable that decision would be. That episode of Cubicle Divas rocketed to #1 on page 1 in Google for the keyword “selling mistakes”. This has resulted in continual sales of that interview on CD, even though I haven’t published any new episodes of Cubicle Divas in over a year.
So, include keywords in your episode title. Choose the right one and you too can gain a #1 ranking on page 1 in a search engine.
Next week, I’ll share 2 additional tips that will help you write an earth shattering episode title.
