Take a look at the Big Picture Worksheet that you filled out. You may want to print this article out and keep it in a binder with your Big Picture Worksheet so you can look at it often.
As you look at your Big Picture Worksheet, think of 3 areas:
Your Ideal Business – where do you want to be in 3 years?Who do you want to work with? Who are your best clients? Where do you want to work? How long and when do you want to work?
Your Ideal Life – your life outside work. This is very, very important! When you don’t have a life outside work, you’re not at your very best. And if you’re not at your best, you can’t be at your best for your clients and family. What are your interests outside work? Hobbies? Leisure activities? Friends? Movies, theater, the arts?
YOU! Yes, you, the person.This is critically important. Because you are your business if you’re the business owner. You’re the business and you’re the leader of your team. You’re the Visionary, and direct where your business goes. To think clearly and make wise decisions, you must be healthy and happy. And make time for your own personal and professional development. What conferences will you go to this year? When will you take a vacation, and where will you go? When will you exercise? And enjoy life?
Your Big Picture Worksheet gives you a high-level Vision of your Ideal business, life outside work, and You the person. If you don’t have all of these listed on your Big Picture Worksheet, go back and add them. For example, if you didn’t list any personal or professional development activities for the year (conferences, courses, etc.), go back and add them now.
To make your high-level, 50,000′ Vision happen, the next step is to break it down into manageable Action Steps that you can do every day. Here’s how you can do that:
Action Step – Schedule a Big Picture Day Once a Month
Before you say, “I’m already too busy, how can I possibly do one more thing?!” —
I’m not asking you to do the impossible. I didn’t do it all my life, either. What I found the first time I did schedule a Big Picture Day was that I had clarity and focus that wasn’t there before. I could see exactly what to concentrate on, where it seemed there were so many To-Dos, they couldn’t ever all get done.
What’s a Big Picture Day? It’s a day where you go somewhere you like to be – by the ocean, the beach, in the mountains, a pretty place. Take only your Big Picture Worksheet and binder with your goals. If you must take your cell phone, use it only for emergencies. To do Big Picture thinking, you must be completely away from the daily details of business. Especially away from the client work and fires that may arise during the day. You focus only on one thing – your Big Picture, Ideal business and life.
Doing this one thing will make a positive difference in your business that you’ll see almost immediately. You’ll start to focus on the things that really make a difference to you and your business. You’ll have clarity and focus. And you’ll start seeing progress. It’s easy to get to the end of the day and say, “I know I did something today, because I’ve worked all day. Now it’s the end of the day. My To-Do list is just as long as it was. How could I work all day and not get anything done?”
