Now that we’ve started a brand new year, it’s time to spiff things up a little … like our Facebook page cover images. Chances are you haven’t updated it in a while. For many of you, it might be more like a good long while. There’s nothing like starting the new year off with a new look, so here are some tips and tricks to updating your image and making the most of it.
In the past, including calls-to-action, contact information, or website URLs of any kind on your Facebook business page cover photo were prohibited by strict Facebook rules. Then with little fan-fare and no warning Facebook dropped those restrictions in March 2013. Facebook still has a few restrictions regarding the ratio of text to image, but the improved freedom and flexibility on the design and look of cover photos has improved greatly.
Cover Photo Basics:
Your Facebook cover photo must be 851×315 pixels.
It’s still a little iffy regarding how much text you can have, but you CAN include prices, calls-to-action, contact information, and website URLs. If you’re running a special or want to drive people to your opt-in or a challenge (like I’ve done) your cover image is prime marketing space!
Cover Photo Strategy:
Now that you’ve uploaded your new and improved cover photo to your business page, the new image will also appear as an update on your Wall. Take advantage of this visibility by adding a status update to the photo.
Find the image of your new cover photo on your Wall.
Click the time notation i.e.: “23 hours ago”
This will open up into new window that shows an “add a description” clickable link.
Once clicked, you will be able to add a description for your photo (“Visit our website to see what else is new with XYZ Company. I would suggest also adding links to all of your social media platforms!”). It might take a few minutes to take effect, but once it does, you’ll see it when you hover your mouse over your cover image.
Select “Done Editing.”
Your updated cover photo with a description will now appear in the news feed of anyone who has “liked” your page.[clickToTweet tweet=”Change up your Facebook Cover image to promote your products and events!” quote=”Change up your Facebook Cover image to promote your products and events!”]
One thing to remember out our social media cover images. People, including me, tend to forget is that your Facebook Cover image is prime real estate, so why not use it to promote your services or products, specials or events? Mix things up a bit and keep people interested by changing your cover image on a regular basis. For the past several months, I’ve used my cover image was to promote my free report and encourage people to sign up for my weekly tips newsletter. [TIP: Then I would replicate the cover image and do the same for my other social media platforms to get the most use out of the space on those platforms too.]
Right now, my cover image promotes my 100% FREE 10 Days to a Better Blog Challenge coming up January 16-27! Once the event is over, I’ll change it up again to freshen it up and promote something else. Not sure what I’ll do with it yet … but I’ll figure it out.
