Social Media is the primary marketing platform for today’s online business, and is becoming a big marketing component for brick-and-mortar businesses as well. Gone are the days when we had to worry about who had the biggest ad in the Yellow Pages, or how much it was going to cost to get a nice size ad in the newspaper. It was a big deal to be able to get your ad in the playbook for the local football team or on one of those paper place mats at Denny’s (Oh my goodness I’m really dating myself with this one!). But that’s not the case in today’s online world now that Social Media has entered the marketing realm.
Now that Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest are on the scene, our marketing reach has exploded. We aren’t even talking about the video world … YouTube, Facebook Live, and now being able to do video on Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn! That’s another blog post altogether.
The world is our stage! So what’s stopping us? Overwhelm? Confusion about what platform does what and where your your target marketing hangs out? Lack of time?
I can’t tell you how many prospective clients I’ve spoken with who know they should be doing social media. Who have a very keen understanding that their ideal clients are out there, but still aren’t using it to market their business. They might have a Facebook profile and post photos of their babies and grand-babies from time to time. They might chat with Aunt Hilda or someone from high school. They might even post great recipes or cat memes. But they aren’t using it for their businesses … at least not in the way they should! Why?
Because they are overwhelmed just thinking about it.
When I talk to prospective clients about social media and what an effective marketing platform it can be for their businesses, I hear:
“There are too many social media channels to choose from.”
“I don’t know where to start.”
“I don’t have time.”
“I don’t understand how they work.”
“It’s too confusing.”
and then there is …
“I know I need to be using social media, but …”
People … social media marketing doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Take it one step at a time and master one channel before adding another! Don’t get me wrong. If you have a brick and mortar business or market solely to your local community, you might still rely on some of the more traditional marketing tactics I’ve mentioned. But for most of us, social media is the most effective way to get our message out to our target market and ideal clients. Not to mention that it reduces your marketing budget to almost nothing.
So instead of being overwhelmed and frustrated because you know you need to be using social media to market your business … you just don’t know how or think you don’t have time; pick one social media channel and start there. If you know your target market and/or ideal client is on Facebook, start there. If you know they are on Twitter, start there. LinkedIn? You get the picture. Just pick one and get started. If you don’t know where your target market is or where your ideal client hangs out, one of our social media strategists can help you figure that out. Then, after you’ve mastered one, move on to the next, and so on, until you’ve mastered the platforms that fit for your business.
