January is generally the time of year when everyone goes crazy setting goals and making plans for the new year. But when it comes to goal-setting and planning, September is my favorite time to re-evaluate and review my business so I can get a head start setting goals and making plans for the upcoming year.
I’m not sure if it’s because I equate September with the new school year beginning, if it has to do with the change of seasons, or what it is; but for me, September is the perfect time for goal-setting, and considering how to breathe a bit of new life into my business. It’s a great time of year to evaluate the current state of your business, the services or products you’re offering, your current marketing plan, anything and everything business-related.
Are you in the mood for a bit of a business fall cleaning? Here are some questions to ask yourself about your business as we head into the final quarter of the year.
- Are you doing work that fulfills you? This is a great time to evaluate all the services you provide and the products you offer. Are there some services you no longer feel good about? Maybe some products you no longer stand behind? Some services you once provided that no longer make sense? Or are there some things you want to be doing more of? This is a great time to give some thought to these important questions, so you can spend some time over the coming months making changes that will bring you more in line with the work that brings you joy and fulfillment.
- Do your clients enjoy working with you? When’s the last time you spoke with your clients about their experience with your business? There might be things about your service offerings, your team members, or your processes that could be improved. How will you know if you don’t ask? This is also a great way to gather some testimonials for your marketing. Write down all the good things your clients are saying. Then ask if you can turn them into testimonials, and use them in your marketing.
- Are you staying up-to-date with industry trends and skills? Professional development is important for entrepreneurs. Learning new things is great for you and your clients. Are there some courses you could take that would help you expand your service offerings? A webinar or e-course to sign up for? Or maybe a workshop or retreat you could take to simply educate yourself about something you’d like to know more about. Education is such an important investment for your business, we all should be doing more of it. Speaker, coach, service provider … whatever, keeping up-to-date with what you need to know to excel in your industry is important.
- Where do you see yourself this time next year? What does the future of your business look like? How much revenue are you bringing in versus how much you’d like to be making? Do you have a plan as to how you’re going to get there from here?
